Cherries, Plums and Apples
The rooms at Katey’s House.
Why our rooms have names
It started as a way of describing rooms to children who can’t yet read a sign and it stuck. Ask any child at Katey’s House which room they’re in and they’ll tell you. Ask which one they’re going to next and they’ll tell you that too, usually with an opinion about it.
The names have stayed because they belong to the children more than they belong to us. Moving up to Plums is a real event in a small person’s life.

Cherries
Brilliant babies
Secure. Curious. Connected. Warm relationships, sensory discovery, movement and those precious first stages of communication.

Plums
Terrific toddlers
Where children go once they’ve found their feet. Plums is the loudest room and the muddiest, and that’s the correct state for it to be in.

Apples
Powerful pre-schoolers
The last year before school, and the one children look forward to for two years beforehand. Apples children know they’re the oldest and they carry it well.

Moving up
Moving room is a big deal and it’s handled like one.
Your child visits their new room several times before they move, with someone they know, for as long as they need. They’ll meet the people who’ll be with them and see where things are kept while it’s still just a visit. By the time they move, it isn’t new.
Children usually move with others rather than alone, so a friend comes too. And their key person talks properly to the next room about what your child likes, what they find hard and how they settle.
We’ll talk to you before it happens. And if your child isn’t ready, we wait until they are.
So when you visit, ask to see all the rooms, even if your child would only be in one of them. What you’re choosing is the whole journey.
